Director of the Research Group «Traffic Engineering»
The research group «Traffic Engineering» will be established in January 2011 as part of the Institute for Transport Planning and Systems (IVT) of ETH Zürich. It will replace an earlier group, which will be disbanded after the retirement of that group’s directors in late 2011. The new director is sought for an appointment from
1 October 2010 or another mutally agreed date.
Tasks The group will focus its work on traffic flow and capacity issues of motorised transport. The director will develop basic theoretical understandings and methods for the measurement, calculation and optimisation of traffic flow under modern traffic management and traffic control systems. The results will be published in the relevant academic and professional journals and conferences.
The director will offer him/herself the tow-three directly relevant courses in the BSc and MSc programmes of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering (D-BAUG). He/She will co-ordinate the wider teaching programme for highway engineering. Those other courses will be given by adjunct staff.
Requirements The applicant should have a degree, preferably a PhD, in traffic engineering or a related discipline. The candidate will have relevant research and, or practical experience in the area. The director supervises and manages the members of his/her group. He/she is responsible for any third party funding and for all contacts with industry and road administrations inside and outside Switzerland. The director is member of the IVT board.
Conditions The post offers flexible working hours, excellent working atmosphere, independence, large responsibility, and up-to-date infrastructure. Close co-operation with Swiss and international research groups offer exciting opportunities.
The post is for 6 years in the first instance, but a permanent appointment is envisaged, if the academic performance matches the expectations of such a senior appointment.
The place of work is at ETH Science City on the Hönggberg campus of the ETH.
