Bachelor and Master Education at the Department of Architecture

Bachelor Education
The bachelor programme begins with three academic areas: design and construction, engineering disciplines, and historical-social disciplines. The first year serves to establish a common basis in the development of perception and design skills, and in the methodology of architectural design. The year concludes with ‘basis’ examinations in all subjects. In the second and third years, skills are reinforced and expanded upon, and students gain the foundations for a master’s degree.

Written tests are given for all mandatory subjects in the second and third years. Throughout the programme, design and construction studios foster an individual way of working, which relates to specific architectural issues and integrates disciplines involved in the construction process. The bachelor's degree also requires six-months of additional professional experience (internship) in the field of architecture. Two seminar weeks per year enable discussion of closely defined, concrete issues on site in small groups and in direct contact with lecturers.

Master Education
The master programme serves to reinforce the base of knowledge acquired during undergraduate studies and to promote an increasingly independent, individual work approach. The degree furthers the development of integrative thinking and design skills and trains students to manage larger architectural assignments. Elective and in-depth courses make it possible to shape an individual study profile. The master programme concludes with three elective subjects and the 10-week master thesis. For this thesis, students select a given topic within the fields of construction, architectural design, or urban planning. Qualified students may – in consultation with the Chair – elect to pursue a self-defined topic. In order to obtain a master’s degree, students must also provide proof of a further, minimum six-month internship.
