Von Infrastrukturen erwarten wir, dass sie funktionieren. Oftmals übersehen wir dabei den intensiven Aufwand dahinter. Es wird darüber geforscht, wie sich die Netze in Zukunft ändern werden und wie die Gesellschaft auf unzureichende Dienste reagieren könnte. Dafür bedarf es nicht nur klassischer Ingenieure, sondern auch Architektinnen, Raumplaner, Verkehrsplanerinnen und Sozialwissenschaftler. Wir wünschen viel informatives Lesevergnügen.

The Interdisciplinary Nature of Planning Interventions on Network Infrastructure in Urban Areas
Interventions must be executed on infrastructure networks in urban areas to ensure that they provide adequate levels of services. The optimal planning of these interventions requires consideration of the work of many experts to appropriately consider the spatial and temporal aspects of the networks, how the networks might be expected to change in the future, and how society might react to inadequate levels of services. Future work to enable the development of optimal intervention programs in the real world, requires research involving not only classical engineers, but also architects, spatial planers, traffic planners, and social scientists.

Das Gleis lebt!

«Ta-dack-ta-dack-ta-dack»: Das war einmal das Geräusch, das die Eisenbahn von sich gab, bevor die Schienen lückenlos miteinander verschweisst wurden. Temperaturbedingte Spannungen müssen heutzutage vom Gleis aufgenommen werden. In Bögen mit kleinen Radien führt dies zur «Bogenatmung». Damit diese möglichst gleichmässig ist, wird am IVT geforscht, welchen Einfluss die Rahmensteifigkeit auf das Atmungsverhalten des Gleises hat. Patrick Braess 

Eine neue transalpine Eisenbahnlinie: Scuol, Landeck, Mals

Seit vielen Jahren schwelt in der Region zwischen dem Unterengadin, dem Oberinntal und dem Vinschgau eine utopische Idee: eine Eisenbahnverbindung zwischen Scuol, Mals und Landeck. Die bestehenden Überlegungen beruhen auf einem langen und teuren Tunnel. Das Studio Meili Vogt Conzett analysierte mit Architekturstudierenden die Möglichkeit einer oberirdischen Linienführung mit starkem Landschaftsbezug. Das Resultat wurde an der HTW Chur präsentiert und im SRF dokumentiert. Planungsplattform für Hochspannungsleitungen

Um den Planungsprozess von Hochspannungsleitungen zu optimieren, wurde von den Professuren PLUS und GIS gemeinsam mit Industriepartnern eine erweiterbare Web-Plattform entworfen. Diese bietet interaktive und realistische 3D-Landschaftsvisualisierungen für die Beurteilung der Auswirkungen einer neuen Hochspannungsleitung auf das Landschaftsbild und erleichtert damit den Austausch zwischen verschiedenen AkteurInnen. Scales of Power

In collaboration with the Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning Lab at the Technion in Haifa, the DesignLab (Prof. Girot) has been mapping the site of the Jordan River Powerplant at Nahayarim, built in 1932. Using advanced point cloud technology, the site was scanned to achieve a 3D model of astounding precision and aesthetic beauty that enabled ETH students in the course Scales of Power to investigate geo-political dimensions of the landscape. Prof. Christophe Girot, Ben Gitai, Ilmar Uriël Hurkxkens, Philipp Urech. Street Design Meets the Virtual World at the Future Cities Laboratory

Future Cities Laboratory took research to the streets at World PARK(ing) Day and ArchiFest in Singapore, where the public ‘experienced’ new street designs through virtual reality (VR). Immersed in VR, the public explored streets designed for active mobility, provided feedback to improve on these designs and on the use of VR. By using VR, researchers aim to gain insight into the potential of currently non-existent alternatives and provide evidence-based design recommendations. More

Autonomous vehicles are expected to offer higher comfort of traveling at lower prices whilst increasing road capacity. Using the Swiss national transport model, this research simulates the impact of autonomous vehicles on accessibility. The results show substantial impacts favoring urban sprawl and putting a spotlight on the future role of public transportation.

This paper reviews and classifies the traffic optimisation schemes of current mainline railway into two groups: improve efficiency of traffic management by providing resolutions for traffic conflicts; or improve trains’ driving behaviour by providing driver assistance or introducing train automation. Based on a comparison of these two groups, this paper proposes to combine the functions of traffic management and train automation into an integrated optimisation model.

This paper proposes an efficient signal control algorithm under the co-existence of conventional vehicles, connected vehicles and automated vehicles. Trajectories of the automated vehicles are modified to reduce delay and stops. Simulations show that both delay and stops are reduced and the algorithm is robust to measurement errors.
