      • The teaching component of the NSL seeks to impart the knowledge and skills needed to develop the standard strengths of spatial planning and their interaction as well as the ability to develop strategies for the solution of spatial problems. These are central prerequisites for a responsible and successful exercise of planning functions in the service of the public commonwealth and of private companies. Especially important in fufilling these prerequisites is the quality of university-level education: graduate and post-graduate work as well as professional development in spatial, urban and landscape planning. The ETH Zurich has offered programmes such as continuing education courses and post-graduate programmes (NDS, now MAS) since 1965. The NSL (Network City and Landscape) is responsible for these courses and programmes.

71 | September 2026: Tools for Urban Futures

In this issue, we explore how cities can respond to climate change, technological transformation, housing pressures, and growing demands on infrastructure. From a “social thermostat” visualising the contributions of individual actions to collective change, to design studios rethinking data centres and binding regulations strengthening renovation over demolition, the contributions examine how new tools can turn complex challenges into concrete action. They also address adaptable housing for changing family forms, the resilience of Switzerland’s rail network, and collaborative housing models in Colombia as pathways towards more affordable and inclusive urban futures. Finally, a nationwide GeoAI model investigates how accurately population and employment changes can be predicted at the local scale — highlighting both the potential and the limits of data-driven planning. Wishing you a stimulating read!

The Production of Cloud. Design Research on Swiss Data Centres

Dr. Yiqiu Liu, with Dorothee Hahn, Martin Kohlberger, Prof. Milica Topalović, Jakob Walter, Jan Westerheide | Architecture of Territory

Data centres are among the most influential buildings of our time, yet the public debate about their architecture is still insufficient. Behind the metaphor of a weightless cloud lies a resource-intensive construction practice: Architectural “black boxes” are built in industrial zones and along infrastructure corridors, engineered for high power consumption, digital connectivity, and physical and cybersecurity. An ongoing series of ETH D-ARCH design studios on Switzerland’s data centre landscape investigates their social, spatial, and environmental ramifications, and the role of urban and territorial research and design in these transformations. The studios are embedded within the SNIS-funded research project The Production of Cloud, at the Chair of Architecture of Territory, ETH Zurich.

A Social Thermostat to Drive Desired Urban Futures

Johann S. Schuur | Planning of Landscapes and Urban Systems, Prof. Dr. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey

This summer’s heatwave was the earliest, warmest and driest in Swiss history: everyone wanted shade. The moment shade arrives, people are drawn towards it – a collective need made visible, yet planners struggle to allocate such spaces in existing urban structures. Might a “social thermostat” provide the tool necessary to speed-up this process for desired urban futures?

Umbau statt Ersatzneubau?

Prof. Dr. Patrick Braess | Bahninfrastrukturen

Utopia as Infrastructure: Who Gets to Imagine the City’s Future, and Who Does Not

Isabel Serra Benitez & Pablo Levine Mardones | Architecture and Urban Design, Prof. Hubert Klumpner

In Latin America, the future of cities is decided by technical forecasting and the market. What is lacking is not imagination, but its distribution. Utopia, understood as infrastructure, names precisely what is unevenly distributed: the capacity to imagine one’s own future and for that imagination to count.

Can cities go green without gentrification?

More trees, cooler streets and energy-efficient buildings make cities more liveable but also more expensive, especially squeezing people on low incomes. That’s why climate action and socially just urban development need to go hand in hand, argues urban researcher David Kaufmann. Read the article at ETH News
