The world is urban and urbanising. The governance of urban development is critical to realising a sustainable future for the whole planet. High-quality governance today is thus the art of weaving and transforming the urban fabric, involving multiple actors and the needs of people and the environment. It means integrating residents’ expressed demands while managing to deliver effective and sustainable outcomes.
In this talk, David Kaufmann will assess current trade-offs and synergies in the development of sustainable, equitable and democratic cities. Drawing on a range of original empirical work on urban development around the world, the lecture will reveal social sustainability problems in the transformations of our built environments, potentials for a better integrated planning of our settlements, and lessons for increasing the democratic acceptability and effectiveness of urban development. The lecture will showcase the work of David Kaufmann’s research group at ETH Zürich, which examines current trajectories of urban development and identifies potential pathways towards a more just and sustainable urban future.
