Das Future Cities Laboratory in Singapur (FCL) wurde vor 5 Jahren als Zusammenarbeit der ETH Zürich und der Singapore National Research Foundation gegründet. Wir präsentieren Ihnen einige der Resultate dieser fruchtbaren Forschungskooperation.
Ausserdem haben wir die gut vernetzte neue NSL-Leiterin, Prof. Dr. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey, nach ihrem Verhältnis zum NSL befragt.
Phase 1 of the ETH Future Cities Laboratory ran for five years and comprised 13 research modules, varying from building technology on a micro-scale to territorial explorations on a larger scale. During this time, approximately 100 people were working at the FCL in different cooperative constellations. The successful completion of the programme has resulted in an approved research proposal for a Future Cities Laboratory Phase 2, which has started on 1 September 2015 for another five years. Not only were several researches successful in academia, several applications and contract researches contributed to an integration of FCL in the Southeast Asian research and knowledge industry community. Module IV concentrates on two research topics: 1) Diverse Neighbourhoods: Studying diverse inner city neighbourhoods during their social, economic, cultural and spatial transformation in order to develop policy recommendations and design guidelines. The research focused on case studies in Singapore, Bangkok, Shenzhen and Shanghai. 2) Airport Regions: Investigating the reciprocal urbanization impact of airports and their cities and urban regions. The last two decades have seen a sharp increase in the speed, scale and scope of urbanization, which has fundamentally changed the character of urban areas. Transcending physical borders, political jurisdictions and social spheres, urbanization has become a planetary phenomenon. Urban forms associated with relatively stable human settlement spaces – often represented as dots on a rural background – are replaced by increasingly heterogeneous, complex and polymorphous urban regions. What are the mechanisms at work in the production of territory and what are their effects on the make-up of the human habitat? In order to tackle this question, the research focused on the relationship between forms of collective organization (social, political, and economic) and the forms of territorial organization (the material reality of the man-made environment) by using particular projects in Ethiopia, Brazil, Egypt, India, and Indonesia. The researchers of the project Landscape Ecology demonstrate that a change of paradigm in river rehabilitation is possible, and provide a future vision that balances concerns over flooding, water quality, and ecology, with the realities of a rapidly growing Southeast Asian city. Mehr
The flow of people and goods within and through city areas is a fundamental dimension of contemporary urban design, planning and management. Understanding, modelling and simulating such flows in a high-density city such as Singapore was at the core of our research. Mehr

The Architecture of Territory project investigates the urban transformations of contemporary territories. Since 2011, we have conducted the Hinterland research project, using the island state of Singapore as the paradigmatic research case. The project is based on investigations of resource flows of sand, water, food, labour and energy that bind the city to its surrounding territories. The research and the forthcoming book portray Singapore not as an ‹island› or a ‹global city-state›, but as a city tightly connected to its metropolitan region. The future city cannot be built using today’s resources; nor is urban sustainability a matter of universal rules. Rather, sustainability requires a decentralized approach that both acknowledges the global dimension and is sensitive to local characteristics. The Assistant Professorship applies this thinking through its research on alternative materials and their application in specific contextual settings, taking into account the availability of materials, human resource capacities, and skills. The group has conducted several projects in Singapore and Indonesia that investigate collective forms and their physicality as a result of historical and contemporary processes, as well as projective/speculative conception – at a scale larger than a building and smaller than a city. The methodological analysis of collective form included comparative observations, critical commentary, and the search for strategic tools that can be employed to simultaneously shape and understand our built environment in order to produce specific public qualities as cumulative effects. The article illustrates recent design trends in South Korea`s landscape architecture. As the country’s prosperity slowly increased after the Korean War, South Korea began to develop a design vocabulary based on its own traditions and culture. Using the example of Naksan Park, the article inquires, how to link historical to contemporary design approaches.

Mit dieser Studie wurden zum ersten Mal für die Schweiz die Agglomerationseffekte (wider economic benefits) quantifiziert und räumlich analysiert. Eine Verbesserung der ÖV-Erreichbarkeit um 100 Prozent führt zu einer Produktivitätssteigerung von durchschnittlich 1 bis 2 Prozent. In urban geprägten Gegenden ist dieser Effekt in etwa doppelt so hoch.

The urban parking and traffic systems are essential components of the overall urban transportation structure. The interactions between them can be highly influential to their performance. Here, we propose a methodology to model macroscopically such interactions and evaluate their effects on urban congestion.

Die Dissertation entwickelt ausgehend von den fundamentalen Eigenschaften eines Eisenbahnsystems eine Methode für die allgemeingültige Beschreibung von Eisenbahnbetriebsprozessen. Dadurch ist es möglich, unabhängig von technischen Realisierungsformen und einem historisch gewachsenen Prozessverständnis, Regeln zu definieren, mit denen Zugfahrten sicher und zuverlässig durchgeführt werden können.

Der Kreislauf zwischen Warenproduktion und Warenverbrauch hat auch die Architektur der Stadt ergriffen. Sowohl aus ökonomischer als auch aus ökologischer Sicht erscheint die sich daraus ergebende Verschwendung problematisch. Die zusammengetragenen Aufsätze sind Aufrufe gegen die exaltierte Globalisierung der Stadt und ihre Auflösung in gesichtslose und unwirtliche Peripherien.

Casablanca’s Habitat Marocain housing project was built between 1954 and 1956 by the Swiss architects Jean Hentsch and André Studer. The book explores the process of designing and building Habitat Marocain, as well as the increasingly informal further development of the project. Habitat Marocain can only be properly understood in terms of the dynamics between formal and informal building.

Der Artikel zeigt auf, wie die Verwilderung und starke Verwaldung von ehemaligen Landwirtschaftsflächen unser generelles Verständnis und Bild von ‹Landschaft› auf den Kopf stellt und nach neuen Denkansätzen und Umgangsformen ruft.
